The Rev. Jan Willem van der Werff
jwvanderwerff@comcast.net

The Rev. Jan Willem van der Werff, is the third pastor of the Covenant Presbyterian Church in Trenton, NJ.  He preached his first sermon on September 16th, 2007.  Pastor Van der Werff was born, raised and educated in the Netherlands and came to the US in 1996. He is married with two sons.

Prior to coming to Covenant Church, he served as an interim at Boehm's United Church of Christ in Blue Bell, PA.  Before that, he was pastor of the Allin Congregational Church (UCC) in Dedham, Mass, and Montvale Congregational Church (UCC) in Woburn, Mass.  He also has served as a port chaplain for Seafarer's Friends in Boston, a religious reporter for Dutch Public Radio, and public relations manager for the Amsterdam Council of Churches.

Rev. Van der Werff is enjoying the willingness of Covenant’s members to live into their Mission Statement to ‘encourage a diverse worship family,’ and he adds: “Every Sunday is a little Easter, and our celebration should be such that all of God’s children joyfully proclaim: ‘I was glad when they said to me: Let us go to the house of the Lord!’” (Ps 122: 1)

Mickey Reilly
Treasurer

reilly.mj@comcast.net

Mickey Reilly is known to everyone as someone who volunteers his services whenever they are needed and does so with a smile on his face.

Mickey has been a member of Covenant since 1971 and is involved is almost every aspect of various programs at Covenant.  He has been chair of the Christian Education Commission.  This commission is in charge of educating our children in God’s way of love and teaching them the Christian message in order to develop and nurture their faith.  This commission also plans and prepares our Sunday school programs including weekly Sunday school class, confirmation class, and communion class; creates opportunities for families to experience the joy of learning; and supports Covenant’s Sunday school teachers.  Since Mickey’s profession is teaching, his teaching skills came in handy as chair of the Christian Ed Commission.

Mickey has served as chair of the Nominating Committee; has been president of the Board of Deacons and has also served as secretary of the Board of Deacons.  He has been treasurer and member of the Oktoberfest Pilot Committee. He has served on the Worship and Music Commission as well as the Nominating Committee.

What Mickey loves most is working with numbers.  The Financial Stewardship Commission oversees the financial management of the church; proposes annual operating budget to the session, ensures the church is able to meet its financial obligations; and oversees and manages the church’s investments portfolio.  Mickey has been chair of the Financial Stewardship Commission and has enjoyed every minute of it.  He has helped choose a theme for each stewardship campaign and as a result we have been successful in stewardship. He is a hands-on volunteer and has been very instrumental in building up the giving at Covenant.

Covenant’s very popular “Get on Board” stewardship campaign was introduced by Mickey.  He thought of the idea and planned everything.  He spoke directly to the secretary and told her everything that he wanted, how he wanted it and when he wanted it.  He gave very helpful suggestions and as a result the pledges increased that year.

At the end of each campaign Mickey has helped with statistics.  He will gather the numbers supplied to him and then take them home to figure out the percentage of giving, how many pledges increased and how many pledges decreased.

On a personal note, Mickey truly cares about Covenant.  He is always thinking of ways in which to make things “happen” at Covenant and is always willing to help implement his ideas.  Mickey’s friendly personality is a big help when trying to recruit members to help out on the various projects.

In January of 2009 he took on the job of Chair of Building and Grounds Commission and in June of 2010 became the Covenant Church Treasurer.

We appreciate all the hard work Mickey has done through the years at Covenant.  His excitement about Covenant is contagious and he always manages to “get folks together” to do a job that no one wants to do.  He is a highly respected and needed member of the church and Covenant is blessed to have him here. Thank you, Mickey.

Carol Stawski
Clerk of Session

edstawski@verizon.net

I have been a life-long Presbyterian in Mercer and Bucks Counties.  After two years as a music major, I dropped out of school to marry.  When the youngest of five children began kindergarten, I returned to college to complete my education.  I enjoyed teaching, whether it was my sixth-graders, prisoners, a literacy program, Girl Scouts, or Sunday School.

Music has been a passion – I have never stopped studying and listening to it in some form or other, briefly studying several instruments after 12 years of piano, and singing with several choirs. It even got me involved in costuming a local opera company (I adore opera) – four shows a year for nine years, with costumes hanging over every door in the house.

I have a caring husband who shares my love of  travel.  We have visited a large part of the world and would love to continue when it is possible.

Volunteering has been important; my father was a wonderful example.  It helps one to get to know many more people and the community.  There have been so many opportunities in church – Vacation Bible School, chairing Octoberfest, choir, putting on children’s pageants (and costuming), starting the first fundraising committee,  being a part of and chairing some commissions, being a deacon and an elder.  I have been involved in the community most of my adult life, for things like a  Fresh Air Fund visitor, R and R Summer Program for inner city visitors, and meals on wheels among many other experiences.

Life is all too short.  I wish there were more time and energy to work on other projects, but my family and the church are central for me.
